DIY Giant Paper Bow - St. Patrick's Day Craft

Design Team Member Brenna here with a fun giant paper bow tutorial. This DIY paper bow is a great decoration that works for almost any holiday and finishes off those trendy paper chains. You can use it to add that extra "wow-factor" to your Valentine’s Day card or to entice your leprechaun into your finely made trap for St. Patricks’ Day. And don’t forget to use it on top of your paper wrapped present for birthdays or even Christmas. Honestly, the options are endless! This DIY oversized paper bow is going to be your new favorite craft because it’s so easy to make and looks absolutely fabulous.

Giant Rainbow Paper Bow

For mine, I decided to make a rainbow bow to use for St. Patrick’s Day. However, you can use any set of colors you like. Just make sure to get a good quality paper. I always like to use 12x12 Cardstock Shop paper because I know I can always count on it being high-quality paper that’s really easy to work with.

Supplies:

● 5-6 Colors of Cardstock: This beautiful pack of Encore Textured Cardstock in rainbow
colors (plus many more) would be a great place to start.

For this big bow specifically, I used All American Red, Mandarin Orange, Lemon Twist,
Lucky Clover, Blue Topaz, and one glittery gold paper Gold Ring Sequin to tie it all
together.

If you want to have a different set of colors for your DIY multi-color oversized
paper bow, 12x12 Cardstock Shop makes it easy by selling these curated packs of solid paper.

These patterned paper collections could also be really fun and different.

● Glue: Any glue would work, but if you’re already getting paper, I recommend trying
Beacon 3-in-1 Advanced Craft Glue.

● An Electronic Die Cutter (or patience to cut by hand!)

● The DIY Rainbow Paper Bow FREE FILE: Click the link to get this
easy-to-use free file. No strings attached. It’s our gift to you!

Assembling A Multi-Colored Paper Bow

Now that you have the supplies and you’ve downloaded the free file, we’re ready to put it
together!

Step 1: Cut the file using your favorite 12x12 Cardstock, using your preferred cutting method.

After cutting, you should have 5 pairs (10 pieces) of different sizes that are long ovals with tails on the side, a long U or V shaped piece that’s for the bottom of the bow, and one rectangle that you’ll use to wrap the bow in the end.

After ensuring you have all the pieces, you can move on to building your base.

Step 2: Pick the biggest two pieces (mine were red) to create your base. These pieces will fold in half to become the halves of the bow.

Step 3: Match the two big pieces up end to end. Glue just the tail ends layered on top of each other, so they look like giant chain link sausages.

Step 4: Then fold up each half, gluing the outer tail ends on top of each other. It should look like a bow when you're done.

Step 5: After establishing your base, arrange and pair your remaining pieces biggest to smallest.

Step 6: Layer each piece over each other going from biggest to smallest. This should be really similar to steps 3&4, except you don’t have to glue the pairs together first. Just make sure that you’re folding over and gluing the tail ends in the same place every time.

Step 7: Finish it off with the final piece that’s a small rectangle. Wrap it around the center of the bow where all the tails meet, and glue it.

Rainbow Bow Garland Idea

Since I used this for St. Patrick’s Day, I wanted to really lean into the rainbow aesthetic. If you want to too, here’s what you can do to elevate this craft:

Create a white paper chain using any white cardstock. Then, you can tape the white chain onto the wall to look like clouds, then add the bow on top to look like it’s tying it all together.

I love the way it turned out.

I hope you enjoy this fun, DIY rainbow paper bow project as much as I do! You can get the free file HERE. This multi-color bow is the perfect touch to any gift or project. I’m half-tempted to wear it in my hair (as long as it’s a sunny day, of course). If you make one, make sure to tag 12x12 Cardstock Shop on Instagram, because I’d love to see what you create!

And remember, you can totally make that!
