We're excited to have Guest Designer Tracy Fear with us this week. She shares with you step-by-step directions so you can create your own Shabby Chic card. This mixed media card tutorial features lots of individual little tips for making junk journal inspired cards. Tracy made this mixed media handmade card using several soft shades of our Encore cardstock paper that make for the perfect base to create.
To get started you will need a top panel measuring 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches and a card base with the same measurements once it is folded (A2 card measuring 11 x 4 1/4 scored at 5 1/2 inches). For the top panel, Tracy used Vanilla Ice Cream Encore paper.
Choose your ephemera. This will be inside of the frame. Tracy chose some cheesecloth, a book page, and some Tim Holtz Ephemera. Select your frame and florals dies. Tracy chose a frame die from GinaK Designs Master Layouts 12 and a Tim Holtz Sizzix die set, Brushstroke Flowers, Mini. Select one or two stencils to add texture to the background. Tracy chose two.
TIP: Don't worry if you don't have these exact supplies. Look through your stash and find similar items.
On the precut panel, stencil the background using slightly darker shades. Tracy used Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Antique Linen for the pattern and Tim Holtz Distress Oxide in Tea Dye for the lettering. Glue the panel down to the card base.
Die cut at least 8 of the floral sets and 16 of the greenery. You will have some left over, but it’s better to have more than you need! Tracy chose one of the floral sets and die cut them from Pink Champagne, Flamingo, Vanilla Ice Cream, Tea Green, and Green Iguana from our Encore line.
Put all of the pieces together so they are ready to go.
Cascade the flowers as shown and alternate leaves placement and glue them down to the frame. Add the circle part to the back of the frame to support the ephemera.
Enhance your ephemera to better coordinate with the card. Here, Tracy used her Stabilo Chalk Pencils to enhance the colors of the butterfly ephemera. Create a little cluster with the ephemera. Here, Tracy has just torn a small bit of the book page paper and stapled it to the translucent ephemera and the bit of cheesecloth.
Glue down the little cluster that you made and add some foam tape to pop up the focal point, in this case, the butterfly.
Stamp the sentiment onto the Tea Green Encore paper and cut with a coordinating die, trim down the flowers and add them to the top left and bottom right of the sentiment as shown. This will be the inside of the card.
Now for the fun part! Tracy chose some heart shaped pearls for her embellishments. Use an iridescent glitter glue to enhance the focal point and the insides of the flowers.
Shown here, Tracy added a thick layer of Stickles for the butterfly body and just used her finger to smear some onto the wings. Wait for the Stickles to dry and your beautiful, Shabby Chic card is complete.
Try making your own junk journal inspired handmade card and use any combination of colors that makes you happy! Pull out your ephemera and die cuts and just play around to build card fronts. Encore Textured and Smooth cardstock makes for beautiful die cuts.
