If you’ve ever struggled to line up letters or oddly shaped pieces on a cardstock
project, you know how frustrating “eyeballing it” can be. One tiny shift and
suddenly everything looks off! Instead of guessing, let your Cricut do the hard
work for you. By adding a simple score outline in Design Space, you can create a
built-in placement guide that makes assembling your layered cardstock designs
quick, clean, and perfectly aligned every time. Let me show you how to score in Cricut Design Space to make assembly easy.

By scoring a light outline onto your base layer, you create a placement guide.
When it’s time to glue, there’s no guessing — just line it up with the score marks
and stick it down like a pro. Want to learn how but don’t know where to start?
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you align those pieces perfectly every time.
Scoring In Cricut Designs Space For Placement Guide

Step 1: Choose Your Image
Insert or select the image (letter or shape) that you want to use on your canvas.
Select the layer that you would like to score on the right hand side where it says
layers.

Step 2: Duplicate the Image
• Select the image.
• Click Duplicate.
• Move one copy to the side.
You’ll use one copy for scoring and one for cutting.

Step 3: Change One Copy to “Score”
• Select the image in the layer bar that you want to turn into a score line.
• In the top toolbar, click the Operation dropdown (where it says Basic Cut).
• Change it to Score (under the Draw options).
Your image will now appear as dashed lines. That’s how you know it’s set to score!

Step 4: Position It on Your Base Layer
Move the scored image directly on top of the base layer (blue square in photos)
where you want it placed.
This will create your alignment guide.

Step 5: Attach the Layers
This step is IMPORTANT!
• In the Layers panel on the right, hold down Shift.
• Select both:
◦ The scored image
◦ The base layer you want it scored onto
• Click Attach at the bottom of the Layers panel.
Now Cricut knows to score that outline onto that exact piece.

Step 6: Click “Make It”
When you click Make It, look at your mat preview.
If everything is attached correctly:
•You’ll see the dashed score lines directly on top of the base shape.
•Nothing will be floating separately. That’s how you know you did it right!
•Your machine will prompt you when it's time to put in your Cricut scoring tool.

And that’s it! A simple score line can take your designs from “almost lined up” to
perfectly polished in just a few clicks. No more guessing. No more shifting pieces
around while the glue is drying. Just clean, professional alignment every time.
It’s small techniques like this that truly elevate your paper projects, especially
when you’re creating layered cake toppers and detailed designs. The little details
make a big difference.

Give this Cricut Design Space scoring hack a try on your next project and watch how much smoother your assembly process becomes. Once you start scoring for placement, you won’t want to go back!
