Hi crafters! Aly Dosdall here again with a cool way to draw and write in foil on your holiday projects. Last month I shared how to use the Foil Quill pens with your electronic cutting machine, and this month I’m excited to introduce you to the Foil Quill Freestyle Pens! These pens also allow you to foil on your projects, but without being connected to a cutting machine! They’re also ideal for foiling on objects too large to fit into a cutting machine, and for foiling on the go. Want to add your signature to a card or piece of artwork in foil? No problem! And, they work on paper, acetate, chipboard, leather, wood, chalkboard, ribbon, ceramics, glass, and much more.
I used the Freestyle Pens to create this festive foil gift tag, and I’ll tell you how. The Freestyle Pens are USB powered, so the first step is to plug them in to a battery pack, laptop, tablet or wall adapter, and let them heat up for 5-10 minutes.
While the pens are heating, prep your material and foil. I like to work on the Foil Quill Magnetic Mat. It works great for foiling with electronic cutting machines or without. I love that I don’t need to use lots of tape to hold my material and foil in place because the magnets do the work for me.
If you are good at drawing, doodling, or handwriting you can create your own designs on your project in whichever color foil you’d like. But, if you’re like me and don’t draw, doodle, or write well you can use your stash of stamps to create a template to trace on the foil. Here’s how I did it:
- I stamped an image on the shiny side of my foil in permanent ink. Next I placed my foil on top of my material (I’m using cardstock) and used the magnet strips to hold both in place.
- I wanted my image to be in two colors, so I also stamped the same image on red foil. You can do your image in one color if you’d like.
- With the Standard size pen, I traced over all the parts of the image I wanted to be green. Then, without moving the green foil, I carefully slid the red stamped foil under the green and used the blank spots where I had already foiled as a template to line up the stamped image on the red foil in the same spot where the stamped image was on the green foil.
- Then, I placed magnet strips on the red foil to hold it in place, and removed the green foil. Using the Fine tip pen, I traced over all the parts on the image that I wanted to be red.
- To add a red sentiment inside the wreath image, I stamped “Tis The Season”.
- Then I traced over that image with the Bold size pen.
- I removed the red foil, and then wanted to sign the gift tag.
- I placed gold foil on the cardstock below the wreath image and added my signature in gold foil. So cool!
