Christmas Card Die Cut Hack

Christmas Card Die Cut Hack

Design Team Member Kate here with a card making hack for you!

I love mass producing cards and since we are heading into the holiday season I thought I'd share this idea. There are so many cover plates out there on the market and I have quite a few.  Cover plates are die cut templates that cut the whole card design out at once. I love the process of die cutting and then assembling them, but I ABSOLUTELY hate the little itty bitty pieces that need to be puzzled back into the centers of the letters (like the inside of an a, e or g). I always seem to lose them on my desk! Keep reading for my hack for handmade die cut cards to help place those pesky pieces.

I started out making several of these Merry & Bright cards using Encore Foil Cardstock.  I cut out the whole die in four colors (red, gold, silver and green), then mixed and matched the diecuts and inlaid the different colors to make four cards. Typically you place the larger background piece on first, then puzzle all the smaller pieces in, but it requires that you also put the inside pieces of the letters back in the same color as your background.
I really struggled inlaying the tiny pieces into the swirls of the r's and a's (not to mention misplacing them). It can be tricky to tell exactly where everything should go without the background piece as a template, but it makes so much extra work filling in all the spaces. What should have been a quick process was taking me way too long.  There had to be a better way!

Die Cut Cards Embossing Hack

Christmas Card embossing
I thought if i could just place my sentiments onto the card without the background pieces it would be so much easier. I then decided to emboss my white card base with the cover plate and was then able to assemble my cards much quicker without the background layer!

Almost all of the die cutting machines on the market have an embossing pad.  (I own a Sizzix Big Shot and mine came with a black embossing pad)  I placed my platform down, then the black rubber embossing pad, then my white card base and finally the coverplate.  I topped that "sandwich" with a clear cutting plate and ran it through the Big Shot.  The image was embossed into the cardstock.  Follow your machine's instructions for embossing with a die cut.

Now I was able to just glue each letter on top of the embossed design, not having to worry about all those teeny bits.  It was a much faster process and I managed to make several cards.

Christmas Card Foil Cardstock
Now you can batch a bunch of Christmas cards and make them extra fun with this mirror foil cardstock. And the best part, no more guessing where to place all the tiny pieces!
And a bonus tip. Those white embossed cards make a beautiful simple handmade Christmas card as well. So you could just emboss your cover plate and stope there if you are short on time or want a simplified look.
